Book 4 (Part II)

129 Now though this Pantacle is composed only of shams, some shams somehow seem to be more false than others. The whole Universe is an illusion, but it is an illusion difficult to get rid of. It is true compared with most things. But ninety-nine out of every hundred impressions are false even in relation to the things on their own plane. Such distinctions must be graven deeply upon the surface of the Pantacle by the Holy Dagger. There is only one other of the elemental Instruments to be considered, namely the Lamp.

…write the whole in order to give it a philosophic unity. Gerald Kelly forcibly prevented me from throwing it into the river at Marlotte, though he admitted quite frankly that he could not read even through Book I. and did not see how any one could. Tell me, he said, conjuring the friendship of years, can you read it? Even a poet should be honest; I confessed that I could not! Taking it in sections, with relays and an ambulance, we could see no fault in it, however. It is clumsily built; it is all feet and face; but you cannot make a Monster sym…

The Equinox (Volume I, Number IX)

Be wary, though, and never stir a step from your own ground. You have (for the first time in English) got French slang correct; but you clearly don’t know India, and some terrible old bore has planted the worst and feeblest form THE EQUINOX of a very stale cobra story on your innocence. There are several mistakes in these few pages—climate and natural history in particular. Figure to yourself that this bit of the book reads to me almost as Trléy reads to you !— THE YELLOW Wuat-Ho. A subterfuge in fugues. The Blue Grotto. No publisher. No price.…

… of Ha- fiz, the Song of Songs, the Ghazals of ‘ Ismat of Bokhara ’ — not to mention the obscene Chinese Aphorisms of Kwaw. Yet no doubt though Hafiz sings chiefly of wine, Solomon of Woman, and ‘ Ismat of harloty, we sooner pardon these freedoms because we our- selves can understand, though we can never ap- prove of them : but they seem innocent indeed

The Star in the West

…phy finds its founder in the French philosopher Descartes ; for it was he who started to unravel the Penelope web of tangled philosophic thought , which had lain sleeping for a thousand years or more upon the sterile shelf of Christian impotence . His theories of “ Innate ideas ” raised the anger of Locke , the disciple of Aristotle and Bacon . Revolting from the cogito ergo sum of Descartes , he compared the mind to a tabula rasa , on which he in his turn wrote an equal absurdity in the words : nihil est in intellectu quod non antea fuerit in …

…n of God as infinite therefore denies man implicitly; while if he be finite, there is an end of the usual Christian reasons for worship, though I daresay I could myself discover some reasonably good ones. [I hardly expect to be asked, somehow.] The resulting equilibrium of God and man, destructive of worship, is of course absurd. We must reject it, unless we want to fall into Positivism, Materialism, or something of the sort. But if, then, we call God infinite, how are we to regard man, and Satan? (the latter, at the very least, surely no integ…

And even as the shew-stone burneth thy forehead with its intolerable flame, so he who hath known me, though but from afar, is marked out and chosen from among men, and he shall never turn back or turn aside, for he hath made the link that is not to be broken, nay, not by the malice of the Four Great Princes of the evil of the world, nor by Choronzon, that mighty Devil, nor by the wrath of God, nor by the affliction and feebleness of the soul. … . For we are many , and thy name is One .? Before we leave the glowing east , one more curious similarity still strikes us , it is that though in so many ways the ideas of Aleister Crowley are akin to those of Omar Khayyam , yet his fertile imagination also engenders flights as spiritual as those contained in the melodious ghazals of Jeláladdin . In more than one place we come across lines similar to these in Tannhäuser : I say , then , “ I; " and yet it is not “ I ” Distinct , but “ I ” incorporate in All . I am the Resurrection and the Life …

Can I do better than propose the difficulty to the public , even though , per haps ,I have small hopes of obtaining a solution ? We shall , at least , by these means , be sensible of our ignorance , if we do not augment our knowledge . “ I must confess that a man is guilty of unpardon able arrogance who concludes , because an argument has escaped his own investigation , that therefore it does not really exist .” ? … 10. It is an open secret that the late Herbert Spencer was solely inspired in his laborious la- bours by a desire to gratify his august though be- witching sovereign. It is related that in his early days as a student Her Majesty was visiting the school where he studied. “ What are you doing, Herbert ? ” asked the beautiful but insouciant girl, as she then, as she now is, was. “ Studying phi- losophy, miss ! ” was the brusque yet courtly reply. “ Why study it ? Rather synthesize it ! ” observed the thoughtful though dazzling monarch. “ I will, …

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF HASHISH word which we call a thought, seem to stand at a definite dis- tance in space behind the thought, the thought being farther from the perceiving soul. Looking at each glyph, one perceives, too, that itself is made up of other glyphs yet nearer to the Self, these glyphs, however, being formless and nameless; they are not truly perceived, but one is somehow aware of them.
