There may be failure to apply the right degree of force, as when a wrestler has his hold broken. There may be failure to apply the force in the right manner, as when one présents a chèque at the wrong window of the Bank. There may be failure to employ the correct medium, as when Leonardo da Vinci found his masterpiece fade away. The force may be applied to an unsuitable object, as when one tries to crac…

Magick Without Tears

74 MAGICK WITHOUT TEARS sufficiently simple cases of religion whose essence is the propitiation of a malignant demon. When the light of intelligence begins to dawn dimly through many fogs upon these savages, we reach a second stage. Bold spirits muster courage to assert that the evil which is so obvious, is, in some mysterious way, an illusion. They thus throw back the whole complexity of sorrow to a single cause; that is, the arising of the illusion aforesaid. The problem then assumes a final fonn: How is that illusion to be destroyed. A fairl…

…h a triple essence. In southern lands, even before the Equinox opens its gates before her conquering armies, one feels her imminent. Her light-armed troops swarm over the breached ramparts of the winter, and their cry is echoed in the dungeons of the soul by those whom she has come to save. Yet in her hands is nothing but a sword. It is a disturbance of the equilibrium to which the dying year has attained after its long joy and agony; and so to the soul which is at ease she comes with alarum and tocsin. A soul like Iliel's, naturally apt to rec…

…ons of “normal” consciousness, into which we throw ourselves at recur ring intervals. The doctrine here stated should be studied in the light of previous remarks; verses 61 to 74 inclusive form a coher ent passage: notice the words “death” in verses 63 and 66 and “die” in verse 68. There is evidently an intention to identify the Climax of Love with that of Life. It is then not unnatural for us to ask: Can “Death” have some deeper significance than appears? Scorpio, the Zodiacal Sign of Death, is really the Sexual or Repro ductive function of…

…nge. See Liber 418 and Liber Aleph. Sin (see Skeat’s Etymological Dictionary) is connected with the root vYs, “to be.” This throws a new light on the passage. Sin is restriction, that is, it is “being” as opposed to “becoming.” The fundamental idea of wrong is the static as opposed to the dynamic conception of the Universe. This explanation is not only in harmony with the general teaching of The Book of the Law, but shows how profoundly the author understands Himself.

…upersede the old; my special job was to preserve the Sacred Tradition, so that a new Renaissance might in due season rekindle the hidden Light, I was accordingly to make a Quintessence of the Ancient Wisdom, and publish it in as permanent a form as possible. This I did in The Equinox . I should perhaps have been strictly classical, and admitted only the "Publication in Class A," "A-B," "8" and "0" material. But I had the idea that it would be a good plan to add all sorts of other stuff, so that people who were not in any way interested in the r…
