Dermot Freyer . *WAR IN THE BALKANS . [ RE the snows lie sleek On the moorland grasses Grey guns shall speak In the mountain passes . Grey guns shall bay , Grey clouds come over Wild wood and way Where the vultures hover . And down in the plain , Where the earth lies under Vineyard and grain , Grey guns shall thunder . And many a lad Streets gay with bunting Shall go forth glad , As a hound to the hunting . Shall leave the land And the plough - team 's labour , And take to his hand White lance and sabre .
