138 ORPHEUS THE EAGRE. THE BAYS. Flings my single billow spuming Where the hills reach to heaven behind us Into midmost air the world, A voice is rolled over the steep, As the echo of my booming Some godhead whose glory would bind us, To the furthest star is hurled. Reflected far-off on the deep. Now I hear the lunar clashing We hear the low chant that may blind us, That evokes me from the tide, The song from the ultimate shore. Now I rise, my fury lashing, We come that our lover may find us Rolling where the banks divide— His bride as he found us before. I obey thee, I am with thee, Lord of Light- | We listen, and love; and his voice is the ning, lotus-eyed ! voice of the God we adore. ORPHEUS. ORPHEUS. In sacred grove, Come forth in your gladness, In silent wood, O end of all these ! In calm alcove, O sorrow and madness In mirrored mood, And passion and ease, What light of love Sharp joy and sweet sadness, Your depth endued? Deep life and deep peace : Come forth! I invoke ye, O wells, ye: Come forth! I invoke you, ringed round dwellers of dim solitude ! | earth’s girdle, the manifold seas ! 1 | THE SFA. “THE WELLS. I hear but one voice in our voices ; One tune, multitudinous notes; One life that burns low or rejoices,. One song from the numberless throats. Where ice on my bosom is piled, Where palm-fronded islands begem My breast, where I rage in the wild White storms, where I lap the low hem . Of earth’s mantle, or war on her crags, I am one, and my soul is in them. Deep and calm to heaven’s mirror Through the cedarn grove or ashen, Willow-woven, or cypress terror, | To the sky’s less serene fashion Still we look: around our margin Holy priestess, longing lover, : Poet musing, vagrant virgin, Nor their own mild looks discover, But the light and glow of that they are meditating over, I am mother of earth and her daughter; ORPHEUS. I am father of heaven and his son ; O curves unbeholden, I am fire in the palace of water; Bright glory of bays ! : I am God, and my glory is one! Deep gulfs grown golden I am bride of the sun and the starlight ; With dawn and its ways ! The moonlight is bride unto me; With sunset enfolden I am lit of my deeps with a far light, In silvery praise ! | My heart and its flame flung free. Come forth! I invoke ye, O gulfs, where 2 I am She, the beginning and end ; I am all, the sea is as children, and plays. _ | and my name is the Sea!
